  • During World War I the Salvation Army women would fry up donuts in army helmets to serve to the soldiers. These woman were known as Donut Dollies and the soldiers were Doughboys.
  • During Halloween season Dunkin Donuts adds an orange swirl to their Boston Kremes making them become The Boston Screams.
  • It is believed that chocolate éclairs were invented by Marie-Antoine Carême, a pastry chef for French royalty.
  • In Chichester, UK bakers at The Swallow Bakery in North Street made am enormous 11ft 10in long chocolate éclair, containing eight pints of double cream, and a kilogram of chocolate-which sets the world record for the Biggest chocolate eclair.
  • Adolph Levitt invented the first doughnut machine in 1920.
  • The largest donut ever made was an American-style jelly donut weighing 1.7 tons, which was 16 feet in diameter and 16 inches high in the center. It was made in Utica, N.Y., by Hemstrought’s Bakeries, Donato’s Bakery and the radio station WKLL-FM, and as of 2021 holds the world record for the largest donut in the Guinness World Records.
  • Over 10 billion donuts are produced in the United States each year.
  • Canada has the most donut shots per capita of any country in the world.
  • Boston has the most donut shop in the United States per capita.
  • 13 people have the first name “Donut,” making it the 245,396th most popular name in the United States.
  • The French have an airy fried dough that they call pets de nonne in French, which translates to “nun’s farts.”
  • The Dutch are credited with bringing the donuts to America prior to the Revolutionary War, originally calling them olykoeks, meaning “oily cakes.”
  • “Doughnut” is actually the proper spelling, but the Merriam-Webster dictionary now lists “donut” as a variant of “doughnut.”
  • The Guinness World record for doughnut eating is held by John Haight, who consumed 29 donuts in just over 6 minutes.
  • Glazed Donuts are the most popular donut flavor in the US.

  • In 2009, Krispy Kreme was recorded into the Guinness Book of World Records for having the “largest box of doughnuts” which measured 297 pounds, 10 ounces, 19 feet, 4 inches long; 13 feet, 5 inches wide; and 2 feet, 10 inches deep.
  • There are over 12,000 Dunkin Donut stores worldwide.
