How cuter can a holiday be than celebrating squirrels? Seriously, if you are nutty over squirrels like I am, then this holiday will make you happy!

Squirrel Trivia

  • In the 1800’s squirrels, along with starlings and sparrows, were introduced to city parks to add entertainment.
  • A squirrel’s front teeth never stop growing. They keep them at a reasonable length by gnawing on things.
  • Squirrels like to bury their food for winter months when it’s harder to find but often times other squirrels will steal it first!

  • A Ground squirrel is only pregnant between 25 to 30 days.
  • Newborn squirrels are only an inch long!
  • Have you ever seen a squirrel laying flat on their belly on a tree branch? They do this to cool off when it’s hot out because laying on a cool flat surface helps the squirrel cool down by dissipating body heat.
  • Squirrels back legs are double jointed which helps them run up and down trees easily.
  • The average weight for a squirrel is 1.5 lbs.
  • Squirrels can fall from 30 meters high, without hurting themselves.

  • The city of Longview, Washington, has a bridge named Nutty Narrows. Longview holds an annual Squirrel Fest in August every year.
  • The oldest squirrel fossil ever found is about 11.6 million years old.
  • Squirrels life span is about 5 to 10 years in the wild.
